Abstract

This article examines how critiques directed at psychiatry gained renewed momentum in the aftermath of the events of May 1968. Its aim is to assess the extent to which a moment that has become so significant in our collective imagination can be situated within the longer history of the contestation of psychiatry — a chronology that does not coincide with that of purely political events. The article focuses on the positions of two psychiatrists, the Italian Franco Basaglia and the French Henri Ey. Although their professional trajectories and perspectives differed, both engaged with questions of psychiatric power, medicalization, and the social normalization of behavior — topics that were widely debated in the period following the protest movements of the late 1960s.
